Tidbit Of Interest From Graydon Carter’s Memoir
Roving through my newly acquired copy of Graydon Carter‘s (fun!) memoir: When The Going Was Good: An Editor’s Adventures During The Last Golden Age Of Magazines (Penguin Press), I came upon this fascinating passage that took place during Mr. Carter’s editorship at Vanity Fair. Here he describes a conversation with Si Newhouse:
“At one lunch, I mentioned to him [Si Newhouse] that I was thinking of adding cartoons to the magazine…I had already had a lunch at Da Silvano with a half dozen prominent cartoonists and they were all on board. I told Si about my plan and was thoroughly taken aback by his response. He told me categorically to forget this. Cartoons, he said, were a significant part of The New Yorker’s franchise, and I should stay away.”
What the Spill would love to know is: who were the “half dozen prominent cartoonists” at the Da Silvano lunch. Please step forward!
