The only book I ever pretended to lose from a library was a copy of The Years with Ross that hadn't been checked out in 30 years. At that time, early 1980's, it was no longer in print. I replaced it much later with a cleaner first edition, but I never felt as guilty about the "loss" as I probably should have because, as one of my writers told me, "You need this book."
