The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: released early last week, post-election.
The Cartoonists and Cartoons:
Eighteen cartoons, nineteen cartoonists (Barry Blitt has the cover). Two newbies: Rich North, who is the 18th cartoonist added to The New Yorker‘s cartoonist colosseum this year, and the 162nd cartoonist brought in since Emma Allen was appointed the magazine’s cartoon editor in the Spring of 2017, and Chris Gural who is the 19th cartoonist added this year, and the 163rd since the spring of 2017.
The longest active cartoonist contributor in the issue is this cartoonist.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
Counting down to the 100 Anniversary issue of The New Yorker with approximately a dozen issues to go, the sense here is that Rea Irvin’s classic Talk design, shown above, may stay in mothballs.* I’d be overjoyed to be wrong about this. We’ll see what we see when we get there.
*Back in May of 2017 Mr. Irvin’s classic design was replaced by — if you can believe it — a redrawn version by a contemporary illustrator. The Spill has been hoping (against hope) ever since that Mr. Irvin’s work will return.
